Ford currently trails only Tesla in sales of retail electric vehicles (EVs) in the US, largely down to the success of its Mustang Mach E. The company’s September EV sales increased by almost 3x year-on-year.
In Europe, Ford announced the end of production for its Fiesta brand, a popular mainstay since 1976. This paves the way for the transition to EV platforms including the Mustang Mach E and Volkswagen’s MEB EV platform. Other important parts of the Ford EV range include the commercial electric transit and the F-150 Lightening.
Ford have almost doubled their year-on-year share of the EV market to 7% in 2022. The company’s E-Transit is the USA’s top-selling electric commercial van representing 90% share of the overall electric van market. The F-150 and Maverick were also the best-selling hybrid trucks in September 2022.
Withdrawals of iconic internal combustion engine (ICE) car brands are part of the march towards an EV-dominated future. For a generation of car owners, the Ford Fiesta was “my first second-hand car” or often “the car I learned to drive in”. Affordable access to EVs for the new generation of car drivers and owners is just as important as convincing established car owners to trade in the old for new.
