Sign upSouth Africa remains an important player in the global vanadium market[JA1.1], ranking fourth among the world’s top five producers and one of the few primary vanadium producers (alongside Brazil and China). In other words, vanadium in South Africa is extracted from ore rather than recovering it from metallurgical slag or recycled from spent catalysts. This enables South Africa to supply high-purity vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅), which is used in the aerospace and defence industries.
The approval of Eskom’s ZAR62c/kWh (US$0.038/kWh) tariff for energy-intensive users marks a significant milestone for South Africa’s ferrochrome industry. Whilst the tariff alone is unlikely to reverse two decades of structural decline, it may help stabilise the sector and preserve the country’s remaining competitive smelting capacity.
