Xpeng launches first battery electric vehicle in the UK market to initiate a positive 2025 for Chinese OEMs

Chinese OEM, Xpeng launches its G6 BEV in the UK, marking its first venture into the British battery electric vehicle (BEV) market. The new model will be the fifth Xpeng EV offered in Europe.

Xpeng’s entire lineup was displayed at the Chinese OEM’s initial UK launch in Old Billingsgate, London. The automaker’s SUV G6 model will be the only model available for sale in the UK initially, although Xpeng’s new X9 people carrier was also displayed alongside the G9 in a bid to impress at the event. Xpeng also announced that it will be expanding its range in the UK, although a timeframe for this was not given. Initially released in Shanghai in 2023, the G6 will likely be offered in multiple forms, from a 190kW two-wheel drive entry-level option all the way to a 350kW four-wheel drive option.

The UK has become an attractive market for Chinese OEMs, as it is not affected by the EU’s import tariffs, allowing OEMs to retain high margins on vehicles sold. The new G6 will start at £39,990 (US$49,965) and be offered by 20 new dealerships that are coming to the UK in 2025. Although not on the affordable end of the overall EV spectrum, the new model will be an attractive option for consumers, sitting at the lower end for the SUV market.

Whilst EV sales for the whole of Europe retracted in 2024, the UK performed well, finishing in 8th position globally with a penetration rate of 35.4% in December. As EVs become more mainstream, new, affordable models are required to keep sales momentum. The introduction of Xpeng into the UK market is expected to bring a further boost to UK sales figures in 2025.
