Talison Lithium moves towards environmental greenlight for Greenbushes mine expansion

Talison Lithium progresses environmental permitting for Greenbushes expansion receiving approval from Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority.

Talison Lithium received approval for an environmental scoping document from the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (WAEPA), relating to the expansion of the Greenbushes Lithium mine in Western Australia.

The initial submission for the expansion proposal was filed with the WAEPA in April 2025, detailing expansion of mining operations to the south and east of the current operation including additional waste rock landform, increase water storage capacity, along with additional transportation and utilities infrastructure. The expansion looks to increase the development area of the Greenbushes Mine by 28%, requiring additional land clearing of 191 ha.

While the approval is a forward step, several additional approvals from both state and federal level government will be required prior to the start of construction, scheduled to begin in Q2 2027. The expansion plans form part of the CGP4 expansion at Greenbushes, which plans to bring production and processing capacity to over 9.5Mtpy producing roughly 330ktpy LCE in concentrate.

Despite several other lithium producers curtailing production in 2025 because of the lower price environment, Greenbushes’ preferential cost position means near-term expansion efforts are continuing. The construction of the CGP3 expansion at Greenbushes in Q3 2025 is scheduled to increase capacity at the operation by 0.5Mtpy spodumene concentrate to roughly 255ktpy LCE contained.

Despite a material oversupply within the lithium market in 2025 and extending over the short-term outlook, continued investment in expansions and new capacity will be critical to meeting longer-term demand. Demand growth in Li-ion battery applications remains robust, with overall lithium demand forecast to increase by just under 90% by the end of the decade.
