Is Croatia set to become Europe’s new solar capital?

Croatia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development published a list of 216 renewable energy projects currently under review. The projects have a combined capacity of 5.95GW including a 950W solar park to be located in Šibenik-Knin.

Croatian developer El Sun Energy has submitted plans to build a 950MW solar installation in the Southern Croatian county of Šibenik-Knin. This would be almost double the capacity of Europe’s current biggest photovoltaic (PV) plant located in Badajoz, Spain.

Project Blue forecasts that Europe is set to increase installed PV capacity by 80% over the next five years with a shift away from rooftop towards large-scale utility installations. In order to achieve this rapid growth in installed capacity, governments must commit to renewable auction schemes, similar to Croatia’s recent 622MW auction of renewable energy capacity to developers.
