Liontown and LG Energy announced an extended offtake agreement over 15 years for spodumene concentrates and collaboration on lithium refining capacity.
The extended offtake will have the same terms and conditions as the previous 5-year agreement, though the offtake volumes beyond the initial 5-year agreement are notably increased. Under the agreement, Liontown will provide LG Energy Solutions spodumene concentrates (6% Li2O) totalling 100ktpy in year 1, to 150ktpy in years 2 to 5, before increasing to 160ktpy in years 6 to 10, before falling back to 140ktpy between years 11 to 15. There is also a commitment for Liontown to provide a further 250kt spodumene concentrate (6.0% Li2O) to LG Energy Supply over the first ten years of operation. In all, the offtake will see Liontown supply 2.45Mt spodumene concentrates containing 363kt LCE over the 15-year period.
The updated agreement between Liontown and LG Energy Solution also sees new downstream collaboration to investigate construction, commissioning, and operation of a lithium refinery to process Kathleen Valley spodumene into battery-grade lithium compounds. The proposed refinery will target conversion of concentrates from Kathleen Valley, both from the LG Energy Solution offtake and planned expansions at the operation.
