South African manganese ore production has increased 116% since 2015, driven by global steel demand and China’s alloy sector.
South Africa is the largest seaborne exporter of manganese ore, producing mainly a 38% Mn mixed-carbonate ore.
This is essential for ferroalloy producers - especially in China and India - who blend South African ore to meet ≥36–37% Mn minimum content thresholds for HC and MC FeMn production.
With growth in manganese ores forecast to slow with the maturation of China’s steel industry, the South African manganese industry will need to look for new market opportunities to continue a 2-decade track record of consistent growth.
