Research analyst – Rare earths and scandium

Role overview:

We are an industry-leading market intelligence company and are seeking a talented analyst to join our growing team and support our rare earths and scandium research. Based in either our Stellenbosch or London offices and reporting to our Research Director for EV and Battery Materials, you’ll be working directly with our senior leadership and our global team, spread across six continents, and serving a range of clients including governments, financial institutions, tech firms, and automotive OEMs. The Research Analyst will support Project Blue subscriptions, consulting, and events with a focus on REEs, scandium and related markets. The role involves monitoring market trends, updating our Proxima tool, and supporting report writing, data work, and client calls.

Job responsibilities:

  • Develop specialist expertise in the analysis of the REE/Sc supply chains to support Project Blue’s research.
  • Remain current with industry developments relevant to magnets, motors, fuel cells and other key end uses.
  • Help maintain our research database with guidance from the senior team.
  • Create content and write up research with close supervision from your line manager and product managers.
  • Build relationships with industry contacts and treat these with the appropriate confidentiality and Project Blue values.
  • Contribute in a supporting role to research projects and consulting work across the company.
  • Help nurture and grow a supportive team for new and existing Project Blue staff.
  • Support Project Blue client engagement together with a senior team member (virtual and in person).

Job requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in geology, finance, economics, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including data analysis, formulas, and pivot tables.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, especially in data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Proven ability to identify issues, propose solutions, and implement changes as needed.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ability to create clear and concise presentations to convey findings and recommendations.
  • Understanding of commodity markets and related end-use sectors.
